Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor, a seaside manor, with her sisters, their father, and their stepmother. Once there were twelve sisters, but now the grand halls are filled with loneliness as four of the girls have died tragically—by plague, a fall, drowning, and a mysterious plunge. Whispers in the surrounding villages suggest the family is cursed by the gods.
Haunted by ghostly visions, Annaleigh starts to suspect that the deaths were not accidents. Her sisters have been sneaking out each night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers. Annaleigh is torn between stopping them and joining their forbidden revelry. But who—or what—are they really dancing with?
